Awful experience with health center

Abstract:
The Student Health Center rejected me from accessing one of their basic services. This center, by the way, is possible in part because of student fees....

Wow! this was the first opinion piece I actually liked. She told her experience and then researched to back it up. She told her story to help tell other women's stories. I really hope the Health Center reads this, otherwise someone should tape it to their door so everyone entering can read it.

I am sad to see that nothing has changed since 1988 at the good old Health Center. I used the health center from 1983 to 1988. During that time I had strep throat and tonsil infections repeatedly. Not only did they misdiagnose me several times. They also always made me wait 48 hours for the throat culture to come back before treating me. I missed a lot of class because of their incompetency and lame policies. At the end of college, I was able to go see an ear nose and throat specialist. He immediately told me that I had chronic tonsillits and gave me a prescription for a very strong antibiotic. He also told me that my tonsils had to come out. Nobody at the health center ever suggested that my problem was severe. They should not be open or allowed to treat people.
I could go on about the times that me and my friends were forgotten in waiting rooms for hours. Also, how unprofessional the staff was when commenting in the exam room. Also, the endless lectures that they have not business giving.
Close the place down. It's a hazard to the students' health.

I have actually had a great experience at the student health center. They have some new docs there who really care about the students, and really seem to listen. I think if you aren't feeling listened to, you should really ask for another provider, because they have some really good people working there. I went with my girlfriend who was at the student health center for hours, getting labs and IV fluids and medicine, and she felt much better when she left. I think the doctor and nurses really cared.
