Abstract:
What kind of insight could porn films offer us? Well, besides the captivating storylines, unbelievable acting, and breath-taking stars, porn reflects our pubic society. Dare I say it goes as far as influencing our society?...
"No matter how beautiful the house is, if the lawn looks like a jungle, the property will decrease in value."
It's interesting how blatant the author is in his objectification of womyn. Literally referring to them as 'property' decreasing in value if they choose not to conform to societal norms about body hair shaving. Of course, the whole jungle metaphor functions to associate women with the nonhuman world, linking both oppressions -- the domination of women and the domination of nature. And then, he implies the jungle must be tamed in order to be considered acceptable. This is exactly what multinational corporations are doing to the rainforest, by the way. This is not only unacceptable, it's unhealthy.
Considering how pervasive sexism and the destruction of nature is in everyday life, i am sure few people will notice these connections. Much like the toxins in the air, the most pernicious pollution is often invisible. Maybe the author could take some Women's and Gender Studies courses to educate himself about his role in perpetuating a climate in which womyn are treated subordinate to men.
