The winner was KJ! Couple of minor fact checks: Kevin Johnson won 46 percent of the vote in June and Fargo just 39 percent. Also, in the post-debate press conference, Fargo did not "fire back." She raised the allegations first and Kevin responded to them, not the other way around. That's important, because the Mayor continues to run the most negative campaign in Sacramento political history while Kevin Johnson focuses on the issues.

I would like Students who plan to vote Democrat this election some basic facts. As the founder of the Sac State Young Democrats and one of the founders of the Sacramento County Young Democrats, I am asking you to vote for the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party of Sacramento County, Mayor Heather Fargo. What the Mayor has done for the City of Sacramento was brought forth quite at the debate and will also be covered in the 2 remaining debate. Even though this is a non-partisan election, Mayor Fargo has a very distinguished record as a Democrat here in Sacramento. Here are some endorsement facts. Mayor Fargo is the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party of Sacramento County. She has consistently supported our efforts by donating money, assisting with our fundraisers, supporting other local candidates for office and supports issues that are not only important for the City as well as our basic civil rigthts. For example, Mayor Fargo is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte and the Women Democrats of Sacramento. Mayor Fargo has also been very supportive of candidates who run for election to the Democratic Central Committee of Sacramento. We are the people who open the campaign offices, walk the precincts and do the phone banks for Congressional, State Senate/Assembly candidates and our slate of local candidates for school boards, SMUD Board and other special districts. This is why virtually every Democratic Club in Sacramento supports Mayor Heather Fargo. As an alumni of CSUS and someone who was very active in campus politics, I urge all CSUS students to vote for the real Democrat for Mayor of Sacramento, Mayor Heather Fargo

As a political dork, I had a lot of fun at the debate. One thing though, it wasn't made clear what exactly the Mayor of Sacramento can and cannot do. California operates on what could be called a unitary system of governance, with local governments being subsidiaries of the state government. Many issues such as gay marriage were brought up that the Mayor of Sacramento quite honestly has no control over. To top it all off, because the City of Sacramento utilizes a weak mayor system, the mayor is simply one vote on the city council, and in no way acts as a "President of the city," which individuals may come out of the debate thinking (with regard to the questions asked and answers given).

I thought Johnson far outperformed Fargo in the debate, as the mayor frequently aimed low blows at the challenger, which were uncalled for. I walked away from the debate with little respect for her.
