Ed Ober, what are you thinking?! Don't you know Varlotta can not read things that are not commonly found in the juvenile section of the library? Get real man. Next time you submit some legislation, write it with a crayon on some drawing paper with cute pictures of flowers and dogs and then you'll get somewhere with Varlotta.

Varlotta says that her role is to ensure that the referendum's language is "clear, concise and free of errors" yet she failed to name even one instance of anything that was unclear, too wordy or in error. Not ONE. Rather, she said that the entire thing was 'too legalist' (sic) and that it would confuse students. She thinks that Sac State students are not intelligent enough to use the language that has been working at Long Beach for years.

The entire initiative and referendum process is a sham. If you have any doubt, take a look at the recent referendum where students voted down the athletics increase (and the Hornet increase). In case you haven't heard, President Gonzalez overrode the student referendum (and the Student Fee Advisory Committee) and approved the increases anyway. You can read about it here:

It seems the both the initiative and referendum processes exist to allow student to simply vent their feelings, but not to actually make any important decisions. This is not democracy, it is merely an illusion of democracy, and not a very good one at that. Why do we even bother having a student association or a student government at all? Why don't they just abolish it completely? Oh yes, because it is our constitutional right to create an association to represent our interests. The problem is that this association no longer represents student interests, it represents University interests. Wake up, students. Its time to create a new student association - one that actually represents students and not the university administration.

Well, here it is August 28 and still no response from the administration about this complaint.

In case you didn't know, there is no real procedure or timeline for the raising of complaints with the administration. This needs to be changed.
