Student on life support after shooting at bar parking lot near campus

UPDATED 8:23 P.M. A Sacramento State female student is on life support as a result from a Tuesday night shooting at the Library Eats and Drinks bar, located across from the university's Folsom Boulevard entrance, according to multiple sources. The 20-year-old victim was a junior journalism major and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a black sorority, campus officials said. The Bay Area native graduated in 2004 from James Logan High School, located in Union City. (0) comments

After two weeks of voting, the majority of Sacramento State faculty members approved a vote of no-confidence in President Alexander Gonzalez on Friday, said Faculty Senate Chair Michael Fitzgerald. (2) comments

A majority of Sacramento State's Faculty Senate approved a vote of no confidence in President Alexander Gonzalez, Faculty Senate Chair Michael Fitzgerald announced in an e-mail today. Four-hundred sixty-four faculty members voted in favor of the vote of no confidence, and 134 voted against it. Two members of the faculty senate abstained from voting. (5) comments

Ortiz named editor in chief for 2007-08

The State Hornet Publication Board selected Gamaliel Ortiz as the editor in chief for the 2007-08 year it announced on Friday. Ortiz, currently the editor of the News section of the print edition, has also worked on the newspaper as staff writer, copy editor and assistant News editor. The senior philosophy major has worked as a Sports section editorial assistant, freelance writer and a newsroom aide at The Sacramento Bee since February of 2004. (0) comments

More than 200 students and community members joined together Tuesday in a moment of silence and candlelight vigil for the victims of the Virginia Tech University shootings. Sacramento State's Associated Students Inc. held the event in the Library Quad at 8 p.m. It provided a candle for every attendee, and a mood to set the flame to honor the victims of what is being called "the worst shooting in American history." This week Sacramento State's PRIDE Center and Queer Straight Alliance group are celebrating Pride Week. Cynthia dela Cruz, PRIDE coordinator and undergraduate in Health Science, said Pride month is celebrated around the world in June, but since most colleges end in May, they take a week in April to celebrate. About 90 Sacramento State students rallied to raise campus awareness of the effect that the U.S. Military is having on Iraq and Afghanistan.
