Interview with "Slighty Stoopid"

Slighty Stoopid will be at Empire nightclub this Sunday

For those of you not into the whole Emo/Screamo deal or the Indie thing, there is something refreshingly different and much more laid back. Sure they've been around for a while, but ska and reggae are still strong and there are some very solid bands still churning out records today. Two of those bands, The Supervillains and Slightly Stoopid, are heading to Empire this Sunday to give Sacramento what will most likely be an awesome show. Miles Doughty, lead singer and guitarist of Slightly Stoopid, give us an insight of the band and their upcoming show. (0) comments

Natives of Sacramento, the band said it hopes to bring a whole spectrum of hip-hop to the current state of hip-hop culture. Influenced by artists such as Nas, Rakim, De-La-Soul and 2Pac, the group said it feels its versatility enables them to conquer a variety of styles found in both old-school and modern-day hip-hop culture. Thailand is your land, Thailand is my land

Career possibilities from studying abroad

Thailand is your land, Thailand is my land

For the third year in a row, Sacramento State students have been invited to participate in a paid teaching program at the Chitralada Royal Palace School in Bangkok, Thailand.

Communication Studies Professor Thomas Knutson said he believes the experience is invaluable for students, as it will prepare them for life in the "global village." He said students will not only learn to appreciate other cultures, but will gain a new understanding and appreciation of their own. (0) comments

Dorm-ed if you do, dorm-ed if you dont

Students talk about experiences of moving away from home for school, from teddy bears to roomates.

Dorm-ed if you do, dorm-ed if you dont

As students lay their heads down to rest, an uncertain feeling might come over them as they catch a glimpse of a complete stranger several feet away, snoring ridiculously loud. Right about now, the tightest of living quarters would make a closet feel welcoming.

The narrow rooms that are being described are the Sacramento State dormitories. Sac State dorm rooms have been described by some as compact, and students are sharing stories of their rooming experiences and being away from home and their parents for the first time. (0) comments

Fast-forward to 2007, an era where sitcoms come and go with the blink of an eye. Most actors are lucky to make it big once, let alone mount a comeback. "Back To You," which airs on Fox at 8:00 p.m., marks the return of Kelsey Grammer("Cheers" "Frasier") and Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond") to television as the anchor team of Pittsburgh's own WURG-9 News. Professionalism in the workplace is an appropriate choice

College students should know the rules for dressing for their career

Professionalism in the workplace is an appropriate choice

All college students are working toward graduating and starting a career in the field of their choice. They attend classes, read textbooks and write papers, but when do students learn the rules about dressing for the job they want? How do they make the transition from jeans, T-shirts and flip-flops to blouses and slacks? Students and professors agree that fashion in the workplace is not something that is particularly stressed in the classroom. (1) comment

Blog: 'Real World' recap -- episode 6

Analysis of MTV's reality show

So! Another day, another argument. Seriously, when do these people not argue? Their pathetic arguments and catty remarks are almost as bad as the mini-skits MTV plays during the commercials. Shauvon had some "fun" the last episode; so she decided to take a step back, give herself a three foot gap and chill for this one. Smart move honey. (3) comments

BLOG: 'Real World' recap -- episode 7

Analysis of MTV's reality show

This was the most uncomfortable episode this season so far. Religion, homosexuals and crying! My goodness!

Grow up.

This week on the Real World, anger sparked as Trisha confronted her worst enemy: Sin. (4) comments

This morning, a black semi truck pulling a 53-foot trailer with big bold white letters that read "ROCK BAND," pulled on to campus. Sacramento State students, whether observing or passing by, detoured into the lure and glamour of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. It's not too often that students get to walk onto campus in the morning and wonder whether or not Optimus Prime is parked in front of the new Hornet Bookstore. As the truck opened up, it transformed into a stage. (0) comments

Aloha! Campus eatery re-opening

Passion, dedication and some delicious food. Those are the three ingredients of Hula's Bar and Grill formerly known as Hula Dog, according to owner Reggie Leipsic.

Located in the Riverfront Center, students will be surprised to know that the menu is more than just hot dogs. (1) comment

Looks can be deceiving. Anyone with experience in the world of dim lighting and drinks can attest to that, but it has also found new meaning in the virtual realm of television. Thank "Laguna Beach" for that. When Kristin Cavallari and crew debuted on MTV, so did the dawning of a new era - faux reality shows. (0) comments

Most award shows tend to be self-serving, ego-driven spectacles that last longer than most PBS documentaries (and can be just as boring). The 2007 Emmy awards on Fox were no different. Well, almost no different. (0) comments

Atheism: teaching a taboo

Professor says people who do not believe in a God are shunned, but that the class topic is a vital, societal issue.

Atheism: teaching a taboo

He's a father, a husband and a writer. But he's also tackling a taboo subject at a university: atheism.

"If a philosophy class isn't making you uncomfortable, it's not doing its job." said Matthew McCormick, an associate professor of philosophy. (8) comments

Bored? What can students do after 10 p.m.?

Late night boredom in Sacramento can be avoided

As if it was straight out of a horror film, you slowly see the minute hand of the clock on your wall straddle across the 12 with the hour-hand firmly set on the 10. The two-hour rush of network reality TV programming has just ended and Sportscenter is on its third consecutive replay. Then seconds later, you get a text from your buddy Omar. "Party is cancelled!"

This is about the time when you realize that have reached the proverbial purgatory of Student life - the Zone-of-Boredom (ZOB). (0) comments

Hi, my name is Jake Corbin, and I'm a procrastinator. Like many of you who read this, I tend to do just about anything - scratch that - everything before getting started on schoolwork. Apparently, NBC feels I'm not the only one, because they chose to blast the site with advertising for their new action-comedy "Chuck." (0) comments

It seemed that the only thing the Foo Fighters have been fighting against over the past decade was fading into obscurity. Their most recent releases, including 2005's double CD "In Your Honor," failed to live up to the media hype. By far, the best songs on those albums were the songs that were released as singles. For their sixth album, "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace," the Foo Fighters have once again teamed up with producer Gil Norton, whom they last worked with on their groundbreaking album, 1997's "The Colour and the Shape." Perhaps this reunion was just what the Foo Fighters needed to successfully return to form. (0) comments

Game on, player

The University Union Game Room gets new games and remodeled the atmosphere this semester. New chairs and lighting topped off the Game Room's new look.

Game on, player

Neng Cha, a second-year freshman psychology major at Sacramento State, leans into position, one eye shut and the other narrowing in on the perfect shot. With one hard swoosh of the long pool stick, the cue ball rolls across the newly covered red felt, bumping a red ball just right and into the top left pocket of the pool table.

"What makes it fun is the socializing and the bragging about your skills," Cha said. (1) comment

Kanye and 50 battle it out

CD Review: Kanye West and 50 Cent

Kanye and 50 battle it out

So what's the big deal? Two albums dropping on the same day is nothing new, right? Yes, but we're not talking about just any two records. Kanye West's "Graduation" and 50 Cent's "Curtis" are the two most anticipated hip-hop albums of the year, plus either one can easily end up gaining the crown as the best hip-hop album of 2007. 'Not-so-angelic' band to perform

Influenced by rock groups such as Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains and Godsmack, Minus Halo said their unique style is similar to the timeless rock melodies of the '60s and '70s while also being alternative to the "heavy metal and acoustic sounds of today."
Sean Navin, bass guitarist of Minus Halo, said their sound is heavy but radio-friendly, which makes their shows loud and full of energy. (0) comments

ANT attack on campus

ANT will be invading Sacramento State tomorrow. No, not ants, but ANT, a comedian from Last Comic Standing. He will be performing at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom.
ANT, whose real name is Anthony Steven Kalloniatis, grew up in Londonderry, N.H., which he jokingly described as the "whitest state in the union." (0) comments

Sushi is not so fresh

Restaurant Review: Taro's by Mikuni

Sushi is not so fresh

From the mix of black, clear and frosted glass to the fountain decorating the exterior of the restaurant, translucent describes the look and feel of Taro's by Mikuni.
According to mikunisushi.com, Taro's opened in Market Square at Arden Fair Mall in November 2005. However, the Mikuni empire is much older. In 1987, Kotaro "Taro" Arai's parents opened a modest sushi restaurant in Fair Oaks to help support the family. (0) comments

Restaurant Review: Bistro 33

Bistro 33: Only suitable for adults

One thing is very clear. On a busy Thursday night people don't come to Bistro 33 just to eat. Located on 16th and K St. in Downtown Sacramento, Bistro 33 provides an environment where people eat, drink and party. There are many hybrid restaurants out there that try to combine all the elements of a fun night out. Where most restaurants fail, Bistro 33 delivers. But, does it for college students? (0) comments

Working in a place where I am the only male, it's hard not to be involved in the world of "female" magazines, especially when it's laid out in the break room. It never fails; there will always be a Cosmopolitan, or another magazine of that kind, sitting on the table.

I have gotten used to the bright colors, the gorgeous airbrushed celebrities and the ridiculous thickness of the magazine. It is the titles on the cover that I can never miss. They always jump out at me like a bag of marijuana on a teacher's desk. (0) comments
