Enrollment target missed

Sac State saw a record-high enrollment this semester, but failed to meet its assigned target of 22,970 students.

Enrollment target missed

Thanks to multiple outreach programs, administrative efforts and regional population growth, Sacramento State experienced a record-high enrollment this fall, with nearly 300 more students than last semester. Despite various outreach efforts and programs, the university still failed to meet its target of 22,970 students.

Although Sac State missed its goal by nearly half of a percent, university administrators are continuing to increase enrollment numbers by devising additional ways of reaching out to potential students. (0) comments

Colonel condemns 'war of crime'

A former United States ambassador in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, and Mongolia who quit her job over her disagreement with the president's decision to invade Iraq, said in a lecture today that she wants military and civilians alike to hold their leaders responsible for unethical decisions. "Sadly, I believe in the last six years we have had a situation where the ethical bases of the military and the CIA have been brutally undercut," Colonel Mary Ann Wright told an audience in the Hinde Auditorium. Earlier this month, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a series of bills designed to help California's troops and veterans. Two of the bills are aimed at helping current and former soldiers pursue or continue their education at a California State University or a California junior college. "These bills demonstrate California's commitment to those who currently serve, those who have served and the families who have sacrificed so much to support them," Schwarzenegger said. "Our military community deserves continued educational opportunities and as much support as we can give their families." (0) comments

Following his handling of the proposed natural history museum on campus, officials called for an examination of Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez's leadership and integrity. In a letter sent to California State University Chancellor Charles Reed and the CSU Board of Trustees, the senate questioned whether faculty and students can be assured that Gonzalez will exhibit the leadership necessary for Sac State. Associated Students Inc. President Christina Romero is looking at available options to create student-only parking for Sacramento State's Parking Structure II and III, located at the east and south of the University Union. Romero said student parking permits cost substantially more than faculty parking permits. She also said student fees were primarily used for the construction of Parking Structure III. Romero is working with the California Faculty Association and the Sac State administration to research the issue. (0) comments

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed two bills earlier this month that are aimed at helping current and former troops and veterans with pursuing their education.

One bill will give them priority when applying at state universities and community colleges throughout the state, while the other bill will allow soldiers to pay in-state, instead out-of-state tuition and fees. (0) comments

A letter that was sent to California State University Chancellor Charles Reed and the CSU Board of Trustees on Oct. 19 incited debate at today's Faculty Senate meeting.

During the open forum, senate members argued over whether or not the Senate Executive Committee had the right to send a letter representing the senate without consulting them first. (0) comments

A soldier's journey

Coming off tours in Afghanistan and Iraq where bullets periodically flew past his head, former soldier Tom Kroom found himself refusing to go places and waking up suddenly to faint noises.

Now in his second semester at Sacramento State, Kroom is technically considered a freshman, although he said his maturity is "advanced" thanks to his time in the army. (1) comment

A closing trend?

With two Riverfront eateries gone, some question if other vendors will follow.

A closing trend?

After a combined period of six semesters, a decrease in business led to the closure of Riverfront Center eateries Mother India and Leatherby's Family Creamery, said Matt Altier, executive director of University Enterprises Inc.

"Both vendors did not make enough revenue to keep their units open in the Riverfront," Altier said. (0) comments

A working education

There have been several changes over the past decade that have affected the lives of students and their ability to earn a college degree in a timely manner, if at all. While most can be traced to common issues such as the general cost of living, it is unclear how much others, including longer working hours and more homework, are affecting education.

One of the most significant changes affecting college students today is the sharp rise in tuition fees. (0) comments
