A DNA database designed for criminal and paternity testing for the Tanzanian government was completed after it was built over the past summer.

Thanks to multiple outreach programs, administrative efforts and regional population growth, Sacramento State experienced a record-high enrollment this fall, with nearly 300 more students than last semester. Despite various outreach efforts and programs, the university still failed to meet its target of 22,970 students.

Although Sac State missed its goal by nearly half of a percent, university administrators are continuing to increase enrollment numbers by devising additional ways of reaching out to potential students. (0) comments

Associated Students Inc. President Christina Romero is looking at available options to create student-only parking for Sacramento State's Parking Structure II and III, located at the east and south of the University Union. Romero said student parking permits cost substantially more than faculty parking permits. She also said student fees were primarily used for the construction of Parking Structure III. Romero is working with the California Faculty Association and the Sac State administration to research the issue. (0) comments

Following his handling of the proposed natural history museum on campus, officials called for an examination of Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez's leadership and integrity. In a letter sent to California State University Chancellor Charles Reed and the CSU Board of Trustees, the senate questioned whether faculty and students can be assured that Gonzalez will exhibit the leadership necessary for Sac State. Sacramento State held its very first student-athlete career fair on Monday night in the University Union Ballroom that drew the attention of more than 125 students. Representatives from 20 different companies and agencies were present to converse, provide information and answer questions.

"You don't know where life is going to lead you, so be open-minded to all of the companies here tonight," said Athletic Director Dr. Terry Wanless to those who attended. "Life is a journey and tonight is the start of that journey." (0) comments

A rally for peace

A peace rally protesting the U.S. invasion of Iraq was held by Sacramento State's Campus Progressive Alliance and M.E.C.H.A. today in Serna Plaza.

Mary Riordan, one of the organizers of the rally, hoped the rally had a positive effect on those who attended. (2) comments

A letter that was sent to California State University Chancellor Charles Reed and the CSU Board of Trustees on Oct. 19 incited debate at today's Faculty Senate meeting.

During the open forum, senate members argued over whether or not the Senate Executive Committee had the right to send a letter representing the senate without consulting them first. (0) comments

Nearly 300 people received non-partisan voter information at the Sacramento State University Union today.

The 6th Annual Asian Pacific Islander Voters Education and Candidates Forum was held inside the University Ballroom where Asian-Americans, and others interested in voting, were given the opportunity to learn about political issues. (0) comments

In an effort to further the professional development of the Chinese population, Sacramento State officials are currently in China for the Oct. 26 inauguration of an educational logistics program established at a Chinese university.

"As of right now, the course offering is logistics, but we do hope to expand the list of topics in the near future," said Margaret Hwang, assistant to the dean of College of Continuing Education. (0) comments

Faculty forum discusses change

Faculty Senate holds forum, discusses ways to improve campus communication, increase resources for disabled students.

The Sacramento State Faculty Senate co-sponsored a campus-wide forum with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Accessible Technology Committee on the Accessible Technology Initiative on Oct. 22 in the University Union Ballroom. The forum provided faculty, staff and other members of the campus community with information and details on the impact of the ATI.

The initiative requires books and school websites be readily available to disabled students so they can access and participate in school functions and programs. (0) comments

Erica Angulo, resident adviser for the Sacramento State dormitories, said she still remembers the night when she had to clean an excess of vomit from the face and arms of one of her resident freshmen.

Angulo said she walked the "drunk and stumbling" girl back to her dorm only to discover another girl passed out on the bed and a 60 ounce bottle of Captain Morgan Rum sitting empty on the dresser. (0) comments

Earlier this month, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a series of bills designed to help California's troops and veterans. Two of the bills are aimed at helping current and former soldiers pursue or continue their education at a California State University or a California junior college. "These bills demonstrate California's commitment to those who currently serve, those who have served and the families who have sacrificed so much to support them," Schwarzenegger said. "Our military community deserves continued educational opportunities and as much support as we can give their families." (0) comments

A soldier's journey

Coming off tours in Afghanistan and Iraq where bullets periodically flew past his head, former soldier Tom Kroom found himself refusing to go places and waking up suddenly to faint noises.

Now in his second semester at Sacramento State, Kroom is technically considered a freshman, although he said his maturity is "advanced" thanks to his time in the army. (1) comment

With two Riverfront eateries gone, some question if other vendors will follow.

After a combined period of six semesters, a decrease in business led to the closure of Riverfront Center eateries Mother India and Leatherby's Family Creamery, said Matt Altier, executive director of University Enterprises Inc.

"Both vendors did not make enough revenue to keep their units open in the Riverfront," Altier said. (0) comments

Sacramento State's OneCard Center will issue new OneCards to all students, faculty and staff from Oct. 25 until Nov. 10. The cards will be distributed in the building formerly occupied by the Hornet Bookstore last semester.

Students can pick up OneCards based on the first letter of their last name. (0) comments

A working education

There have been several changes over the past decade that have affected the lives of students and their ability to earn a college degree in a timely manner, if at all. While most can be traced to common issues such as the general cost of living, it is unclear how much others, including longer working hours and more homework, are affecting education.
