It's lunchtime!

Cheng Wang is the man behind the Togo's uniform. Wang shares his experiences.

To the average student at Sacramento State, the name Cheng Wang does not ring a bell. However, the phrase "It's'a lunchtime" just might register with more than a few people.

Wang is the charismatic face of the Togo's eatery on campus. He can be found every weekday selling sandwiches on the walkway between the University Union and the Library Quad. (0) comments

Campus host a Japanese tea room, garden

Sure, Sacramento State has the University Union and a bunch of Java City coffee shops, but have you been to the tea room and garden?

Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden, one of eight university-based tearooms in the nation, opened in June after an anonymous donor had the idea of memorializing his mother's collection of traditional Japanese tea sets and artifacts at Sac State. (0) comments

Fall Fashion: Do's and Dont's

Picture this: the sun is shining, you're wearing your shorts, tank top, sandals and shades, and you find a nice spot on a bench in the shade. Now, come back to reality where summer is over and fall has begun.

You know what that means: it's time for big changes. (0) comments

The stories on Britney Spears' wild nights caught on camera, missed court dates and stints in rehab have recently consumed the media and haven't left much room for positive attention. Not until she dropped her fifth album "Blackout" on Oct. 30. (0) comments

Reel Big Fish to play a 'Reel Big' concert

Veteran ska-punk band Reel Big Fish recently freed itself from its label - and is heading to Sacramento State with special guests Maldroid and Flip the Switch. UNIQUE programs will host the band at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the University Union Ballroom. Reel Big Fish has been in the ska-punk scene for more than a decade. During that time, the band has released nine albums including a greatest hits CD, and its newest CD, "Monkeys For Nothin' and the Chimps For Free," which came out this past July. (0) comments

CSUS is scene of new CSI program

New forensic program helps prepare students for post-college jobs.

CSUS is scene of new CSI program

With all the new crime scene investigation shows on television these days, it's no wonder Sacramento State has its own crime scene investigation program, right? Wrong. Instead, biological science professor Ruth Ballard said the crime scene investigation television shows are not always realistic and most major network shows, like "Bones" are just ridiculous. Security or happiness? That is the question

Some students share their experiences with choosing majors depending on security or what they love. Some follow their heart, some their head and others, both.

Security or happiness? That is the question

Some students believe college is about finding a career in a field they love. Some students just want a degree so they can get a job that pays well. Some students are stuck in between, not knowing whether to follow a career they love or a career that pays well. Which student are you? How much are students sacrificing their happiness to land a good-paying job? How much are students sacrificing job security for a job they love?

Geoffrey Speakman, senior philosophy major, believes that the point of being in college is to find what you love. (0) comments

Sturdy cardboard makes for strong art

Who knew cardboard could be used in more ways than boxes?

For Sacramento State students, cardboard was the main ingredient that went into "The Chair Show," a collection of artistic chairs made out of cardboard that is on display in Mariposa Hall through Nov. 19. (2) comments

Escape to soundscapes

Sacramento State's Men's Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and University Choir will perform their fall choir concert, "Choral Soundscapes."

Escape to soundscapes

Chills. Tears. Standing ovations.

These are but three of the reactions the audience might experience after the Sacramento State concert choir performs on Saturday. The choir performs its fall show "Choral Soundscapes" at 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church on 39th and J streets. (0) comments

American Steel solidifies again

Album Review: American Steel

After what can only be described as a five year definite break, Oakland punk rockers American Steel have surprised fans by unexpectedly reuniting to release their fourth full-length, "Destroy Their Future," which came out Oct. 2 on Fat Wreck Chords.

"Destroy Their Future" is characterized by the same gritty guitar style and grating vocals that first caught the attention of the Easy Bay scene in 1995. It features 12 new tracks in a clean, but not overly produced, 35-minute package. (0) comments

In a recent article by "Sacramento News & Review" titled "Sack State," local sports radio commentator Grant Napear said that Sac State has no school spirit, due mostly to the fact that it is a commuter campus. However, as the article's title implies, other people might attribute Sac State's lack of school spirit to a losing football program. But who or what is really to blame for the lack of school spirit on campus? Surely the football team cannot take all the blame for a lack of student involvement in campus athletics. (0) comments

'Fred Claus' is setting Christmas movie standards

November is here, which means it is time to kick off the Christmas season. What better way to do so then with a new Christmas movie? No Christmas year is complete without a new quirky story about good old Saint Nick. Don't the jolly red guy, and the magic of the season just warm your tummy in a way no other time can? Better yet, ask the man dropkicking a singing Santa Clause lawn ornament. You know it is Christmas time when half of Chicago's Santa's are chasing this guy across the city. Why all the bitterness towards the fat guy? Well, imagine if that holiday icon was your younger brother. (0) comments

When in a romantic relationship, one hopes, it is inevitable that the ultimate act of physical expression is done. It makes no difference whether you call it "making love," "getting down and dirty," or "bumping uglies," the fact of the matter is that you need some good music in order to get the mood right. I am cute, not handsome. I am funny, not hysterical. And, from what I hear, I am a good listener. This would make me the nice guy trifecta.

Nice tends to be an adjective that will have most guys cringing inside. Nobody wants to be the nice guy because being the nice guy is associated with being a loser and a pushover. The perfect examples of this are the nerds from the classic 1984 film "Revenge of the Nerds." They were a group of guys who just could not get any women, and they showed the world just how "nice guys finish last." This classic cliché phrase is one of the most loaded and least-thought-out sayings.

In what do nice guys finish last? How do they finish last? (0) comments

The idea that nice guys finish last is not only a cliché, but untrue. This is because the world of men cannot be broken down into groups of "nice," "jerk" and "in-between." Categorizing men as one or the other ultimately leads to confining them to a group they don't necessarily belong to.

It also assumes either all nice guys are unattractive, or that looks don't matter. I can't speak for all the ladies out there, but if two guys stand side by side, the initial attraction will be to the one who is, subjectively speaking, the best-looking, regardless of personality traits. A nice guy who is attractive most likely has a better shot than a jerk who is attractive, but a nice guy who falls on the "not so cute" end of the spectrum might initially be beat out by a good-looking bad boy. This is because women aren't drawn to "jerk" and "not jerk" on a simple level - other things such as attraction most definitely factor in.
