Aloha to new album 'Light Works'

Album review: Aloha

Indie rock quartet Aloha have come out with the perfect segue into the holiday season with a seven-song EP entitled "Light Works," out today.

Past Aloha recordings, particularly those done earlier on in the band's history, have been heavy on instrumentation, with so much going on that an untrained ear might become overwhelmed. On first listen, "Light Works" might uphold itself as slimmed down, but on the contrary; the amount of thought and innovation put into each song is vast as only Aloha know how to make it. Regardless of what type you listen to - from pop-punk to hardcore - there is one thing every punk rock fan can agree on: punk music is best experienced live. From the pounding drums to being pounded in the pit, there's nothing like the blood, sweat and beers of a live performance. "They've Actually Gotten Worse Live" is NOFX latest attempt at capturing that magic. (1) comment

Ayo's album is a joyful listen

Album review: Ayo

If England has Corrine Bailey Rae, then Germany may very well be claiming Ayo as their most recent folk-soul chanteuse. Ayo. One name is enough for this solo artist whose music is as well versed as she is traveled. The 27-year-old singer and songwriter, who was born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a gipsy mother, has spent most of her life traveling and writing music in search of personal identity. Sturdy cardboard makes for strong art

Who knew cardboard could be used in more ways than boxes?

For Sacramento State students, cardboard was the main ingredient that went into "The Chair Show," a collection of artistic chairs made out of cardboard that is on display in Mariposa Hall through Nov. 19. (2) comments

A magical closet

Communication students collect prom dresses for underprivileged high school students.

A magical closet

Cinderella knows how it feels to be the girl without a dress for the ball. She also knows there are other girls who have felt it, too. Therefore, she is opening her closet so that every underprivileged girl can find the prom dress of her dreams.

In reality, a Cinderella doesn't exist, but luckily, there are real-life fairy godmothers in the form of DiAnne Armstrong, Elizabeth Treto, Maykeling Ortiz, Irina Taranenko and Feuy Saechao who are helping disadvantaaged girls get a prom dresses through a dress drive called Cinderella's Closet. It started Monday and ends Saturday. (0) comments

Most Sacramento State students know about the basketball and the football team, but the dark horse that is starting to emerge from the shadows is Sac State's debate team, currently ranked fifth in the Pacific Northwest Region. The team credits its success to hard work, fun and newcomers, despite head coach Kristen Tudor absence for maternity leave, said team coach and graduate student Theresa Perry. (0) comments

'This Christmas' is instant family favorite

Film Review: 'This Christmas'

'This Christmas' is instant family favorite

Finally, a black, family film that doesn't have Tyler Perry's name written all over it.

"This Christmas" stars Loretta Devine, Idris Elba and everyone's favorite triple-threat Chris Brown. Let's get this out of the way now. Yes, Chris Brown was in the movie and no, his acting wasn't horrible. (0) comments

Jingle Ball rocks Arco Arena

Concert Review: Jingle Ball

For some guys, being surrounded by 16 to 18-year-old girls and their rich moms would be a dream. But for guys like me, it's almost enough to make me never want to attend another Fall Out Boy show for the rest of my life. Almost. Friday was the first of two nights of 107.9 The End's Jingle Ball concert series at Arco Arena, but it was also one of the last stops for The Young Wild Things Tour, headlined by Fall Out Boy. Also playing at the show were Cute Is What We Aim For, Plain White T's, and Gym Class Heroes. (0) comments

With leftover turkey and pumpkin pie gone, now starts the time of serious holiday shopping, which for many students has already begun via the Internet. Several Sacramento State students said they are avoiding the busy, crowded stores this year and have started their shopping for the holidays online.

The shopping frenzy typically explodes the day after Thanksgiving, a day many people deem as "Black Friday." (0) comments

Sacramento's best burgers

Restaurant Review: Top 5 Burger Joints

Sacramento's best burgers

The idea seems simple enough. Grab some meat, cheese and vegetables and throw it on a bun, but it takes more than that to put together a truly delicious hamburger.

Sacramento has so many different types of cuisines from Chinese to Mexican to Japanese to Italian, but sometimes you crave something simple like, say a hamburger. And it is hard to find a place that cooks a burger just the way you want it. Are you looking to break the mold of the same, old burger joints? Here's what Sacramento has to offer. (1) comment

If laughter truly is the best medicine, then the Punch Line comedy club should be a pharmacy for Sacramento State students. Located in the Howe 'Bout Arden Shopping Center, the Punch Line is a popular yet somewhat hidden hideaway for those looking to escape the monotony of school, work and everything in between. The first thing I noticed about the Punch Line was that its location was not obvious. The club is located up a set of stairs and down a hallway. Luckily, if you get lost you can simply follow the sound of laughter echoing from the club. (0) comments
