New student housing meets Destination goal

A new phase of Destination 2010, Sacramento State's initiative to improve campus life, began Thursday with the groundbreaking of a new residence hall.

Hidden on the North end of campus, unknown in location and title to most students, is the Dining Commons, or as the residents of the dorms know it, "The DC."

Signature gatherers, paid employees

Over the past few weeks, employees of various petition gathering companies have been on campus gathering signatures for ballot initiatives relating to funding for construction projects at children's hospitals, regulation of eminent domain and the distribution of California's electoral votes in presidential elections.

If you've ever considered trying out new ways of advertising your event on campus, the effort may be wasted at Sacramento State.

Mission 242, a Christian organization on campus, attempted to reach their audience in an unconventional way: by strategically placing signs in the ground near the library that explained the purpose of the event, but seemingly failed to catch the attention of those passing by. (0) comments

Group fights for fee freeze

Initiative to alleviate student costs could be put on 2008 ballot.

In the spirit of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "year of education" taking place next year, a group in California is making sure that education, more specifically the cost of it, is made a priority in 2008.

Students and Families for Tuition Relief Now is a statewide effort to put a freeze on tuition fee increases experienced by students within the California State University and University of California systems. (1) comment

Performers prep for self-choreographed dancing

The walls of Sacramento State's University Theater will reverberate with music, dancing and talent during Dance Sites 2007, an annual faculty-student dance concert.

The event, which is a collaboration between Sac State faculty members, students and members of the outside community, allows faculty members the opportunity to choreograph performances for themselves or students.

Hovering parents hinder independence

For many, college is one of life's most exciting and mysterious chapters. It gives students the opportunity to become more independent while embracing the first steps of adulthood. Unfortunately for some, parents insist on hindering their independence by interfering in their lives.

According to USAUSAUSA.gov website, a person is legally considered an adult at the age of 18. This means that legally, once a person turns 18, he or she is responsible for him or herself. (4) comments

MOJO: Book display on field draws students' attention

Usually students are accompanied by their fellow classmates or squirrels while relaxing on the fields near the Riverfront Center. Little did they know that they would exhibit a mysterious art display of books hanging from a tree.

"It's very interesting and creative. It makes you stop and look at it," said Guadalupe Romero, graphic design major. (0) comments

A ballot initiative being considered for California's November 2008 election would provide additional funding for law enforcement agencies, increase penalties for gang members and methamphetamine dealers, create a statewide gang registry and establish rehabilitation programs.

The Safe Neighborhoods Act was introduced by Mike Reynolds, author of the state's Three Strikes law, which mandates a life sentence for people convicted of three crimes or more, along with Sen. George Runner (R-Antelope Valley), Assemblywoman Sharon Runner (R-Lancaster), and San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt. (0) comments

Television anchor talks about God

God wants us rich, says local news anchor

Adrienne Bankert, television anchor for KCRA 3, visited Sacramento State today to speak about her religious views at a discussion hosted by members of the International Students Christian Fellowship.

This afternoon's Faculty Senate meeting focused primarily on a bill regarding tenured faculty pay scales. Most of the meeting was spent discussing the appropriateness of the bill's structure and language and how the bill will be integrated into the Sacramento State academic community.

The bill - the Periodic Evaluations of Tenured Faculty - addresses the idea that once faculty members reach the end of their possible pay scale increases, there should be an opportunity for them to continue receiving pay increases based on their teaching performances over time. (0) comments

Sacramento State gets $2.2 million from state lottery

Contrary to popular belief, the California Lottery isn't just about gambling and taking risks. Last year, it generated over $1.29 billion for California's public schools.

Legislators passed the California Lottery Act of 1984, which requires the state lottery system to contribute a minimum of 34 cents per dollar of its funds to California's public education system. (0) comments

Sacramento State Associated Students Inc. Executive Vice President Miguel Cervantes created a legislation that opposes the 10 percent student fee increase that was proposed by the California State University Board of Trustees. (0) comments

Construction begins on new student residence halls

Construction work began today on a new $55 million student residence hall which will add 608 beds on campus.

Students learn about candidates at political forum

A political forum was held today to inform the Sacramento State community of the candidates of this year's United States election.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rudy Guliani and Dennis Kucinich were some of many candidates who were discussed at the forum. (2) comments

Students reach out to local, disadvantaged communities

Students at Sacramento State are calling volunteers to help disadvantaged communities.

The Western Service Workers Association - made up of about 80 percent of student volunteers - is an independent, free and voluntary organization that provides the low-income community with food, clothing, medical and legal assistance and job information. (3) comments

California State University's Board of Trustees approved a tentative 2008-09 budget that may result in a 10 percent increase in student fees.

According to the board's agenda from its Nov. 14 meeting, the 2008-09 budget request of a total of $4.6 billion will consist of $3.2 billion from the State General Fund and $1.4 billion from student fee revenue. (0) comments

In an effort to make Sacramento State a more attractive campus for potential students and community members, school officials have partnered with a local television station to produce short news stories highlighting various university programs.

The segments, called "Focus" appear on KVIE, Northern California's Public Broadcasting Service affiliate. (0) comments

Only 47 percent of America's citizens age 18 to 25 voted in the 2004 presidential election between current republican President George W. Bush and democratic candidate John Kerry.

Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan, nonprofit youth voter campaign, wants to raise that percentage, according to its website. (0) comments

New library leader named

After a year and half without a library dean, Sacramento State is about to have one.

Tabszeera Dosu, whose first day is Monday, will act as the leader of the library, hold responsibility for internal management and ensure the library's quality of service, among other things. (0) comments

ASI address sees low student attendance

Students and faculty gathered in the University Union Hinde Auditorium on Nov. 27 to hear Associated Students, Inc. President Christina Romero deliver the State of the Students Address.

Sacramento State Associated Students, Inc. will vote on legislation today that will oppose a possible 10 percent student fee increase for the 2008-09 school year.

Executive Vice President Miguel Cervantes wrote the legislation that "advocates to preserve the California State University as an affordable, equitable and an institution of quality." (1) comment

In the past year, alumni and community members have increased their contributions to Sacramento State by donating large amounts of money for projects, departments and scholarships.
