The Sacramento State baseball team beat the Loyola-Marymount Lions in its first game of the season Friday afternoon, 12-7. The rain fell during most of the game making for a wet and rainy afternoon at Hornet Field.
"For the first game out of the gate, I thought (the team's) intensity and focus was pretty solid throughout the game," coach John Smith said. "With the rain coming down it is easy to lose focus and get kind of caught in that and they seemed to regenerate when we got slowed down a little bit."

Junior Karina Jarlkagaova broke a 3-3 tie to secure a win for the Sacramento State women's tennis team Saturday in San Diego. She defeated Tammy Kevey 7-5, 6-3, in the no. 4 singles match. (0) comments
Sacramento State defeated UC Davis 6-1 in a battle for bragging rights of the causeway. The Hornets swept doubles play and were 5-1 in singles play. (0) comments
The Sacramento State Hornets lost their final home game of the season against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 77-62.
The loss by the Hornets almost eliminates them from the Big Sky Tournament with their record 6-19, 4-9 in conference, and the Lumberjacks' win increases their chance to get in the tournament with a record of 9-17, 5-8 in conference.

The Sacramento State Hornets lost to the best team in the Big Sky Conference, the Montana Lady Griz, Thursday evening 75-63. This was the second game of a back-to-back for te Hornets.
"(Montana) knew we were tired, so they came at us," said junior center Atty Boyer.

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks cut down the Sacramento State men's hockey team 12-0 yesterday in the first round of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Pacific Regional Tournament in Oakland, Calif. The number one seeded Lumberjacks overmatched the eight seeded Hornets who were missing three players that did not play for different reasons. (0) comments

The Sacramento State Hornets lose another game on the road, falling to the Montana State Bobcats 87-82.
With the loss, the Hornets are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a record of 4-20, 2-10 in the Big Sky Conference. The Bobcats' win improves their record to 15-10, 7-5 in conference.

This past week it has showered pink in the Hornets Nest and on the road. Pink socks, pink ribbons, pink headbands, pink rub-off tattoos, pink hair ribbons, pink rhinestones and pink leotards.
The Sacramento State gymnastics team began a breast cancer event last year entitled "Think Pink," which has expanded to the women's basketball team this season.

The Olympic stage is the main event that track and field athletes strive for through their careers. They train year in and year out, studying film and keeping their bodies healthy and strong. Obviously not every track and field athlete makes it to the Olympics, but two Hornet senior sprinters are a step closer to the arena.
Jody Johnson and Raphael McFarlane from the Sacramento State track and field team have qualified for the Olympic trials this year. Johnson qualified in the 200-meter sprints and McFarlane hit his mark in the long jump.

Gymnasts senior earns 2nd honor
After posting a school record and career-high 9.925 senior Melissa Genovese helped the team post a 194.675-193.30 victory over Southern Utah.

Sacramento State's golf teams were in transitional periods at this time last semester, both getting used to a new coach in former PGA pro David Sutherland, who joined the Hornets just weeks before the semester was about to begin. Senior co-captain of the rowing team Ashley Loucks never dreamed that being intrigued by a sport she saw in the 2004 Olympics would carry her throughout college and ultimately change her life.
Growing up in Rohnert Park, Loucks began participating in sports at a young age.
During high school, Loucks excelled in basketball and her collegiate path seemed clear.

Sophomore Holden Ching boasts all the characteristics of an elite athlete. He is one of the top newcomers for the men's tennis team, which is favored to win the Big Sky Conference this season.
As a transfer, Ching has quickly adapted to Sacramento State, where he is enjoying playing tennis and receiving his education. Being an athlete means constantly being active and Ching defines active.

The Sacramento State tennis teams have a winning tradition and the newcomers this year are contributing to the team's early success.
Newcomers to the women's team are Clarisse Baca and Melissa Valenzuela. Baca is redshirting and is from Chihuahua, Mexico , where she played for Instituto La Salle de Chihuahua. Valenzuela is from Lima, Peru , where she played for Colegio Peruano Britanico. Valenzuela has five straight singles victories and has been part of four doubles victories.

The Sacramento State Hornets lost their last road game in their conference 73-59 to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
The Hornets, who are now 4-21, 2-12 in conference, were held to 34.5 percent shooting throughout the game. The Lumberjacks scored early and never relinquished the lead, starting with a 10-point advantage (15-5) midway through the first half.

Marcus Brown skied for the Sacramento State Water Ski Team a decade ago.
As a sophomore transfer from Arizona State for the 1998-99 seasons, Brown made waves by shattering the Western Regional record and tying the national record for the slalom as he managed to complete three passes around the buoys at 39.5 feet off.
