In 2001 on a diplomatic public relations exhibition to Russia, President Bush revealed to the world that he had looked into the eyes of Vladimir Putin and was "able to get a sense of his soul." When I first heard this loaded statement I quickly came to the conclusion that this was just another propaganda move by Bush to reaffirm his Christian piousness. But now after the recent disclosure of Russian activities I believe Mr. Bush was actually onto something. (0) comments
In 1996, California voters first legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes by passing Proposition 215. Ever since then, marijuana activists have pushed their way to make the distribution of the drug justifiable and now have found their way into the classroom.
Currently a new trade school, Oaksterdam University, has opened its doors in Oakland.

Last September, Sacramento State found itself in the midst of a self-inflicted publicity nightmare when plans to acquire a lavish display of exotic animals fell apart in embarrassing fashion. The center of the issue was that Sac State had given a local, wealthy couple permission to hunt animals that were not contained on a standard Tanzanian hunting license. The scandal loomed larger when it was later discovered that five of the 84 animals requested by Sac State were on the World Conservation Union's "red list." (0) comments
California already has a huge budget crisis, mainly due to prison overpopulation (173,000 inmates in 33 correctional institutions) and over $10 billion spent on prisons annually - a figure that now exceeds education.
The issue of media access inside the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is a highly debated topic and rightfully so. The California prison system is under high scrutiny right now from the federal government and is in dire need of prison reform.

What has the sports world become? Has it really come to this? I guess so. Between the last few years of steroid and HGH investigations by Congress, this sort of paranoia that "any baseball player is a suspect" makes me ill. (0) comments
Part of the experience of college is fighting for social causes and embracing new ideas. Student activists are everywhere on this campus.
They can be found marching, petitioning or protesting virtually daily at Sacramento State.

I attend Sacramento State. I work on campus. I am vegetarian. Though being a vegetarian living in a meat lover's world might seem like it would be a pretty intense task, I have found ways to make the challenge of eating a decent meal into a fun one. (2) comments
Pedestrians -- we've all been one. However, some of us need an instruction manual like the ones the DMV gives to potential drivers.
What happened to looking left and right before crossing the street? It feels as if common sense has been thrown out the window.

I hate celebrity "news" more than just about anyone, but something has to be said: Lindsay Lohan, what in God's name are you thinking? After resurfacing from her longest rehab stint to date, Lohan decided to pose nude in a series of photographs for New York Magazine. (3) comments
Despite a new rule of power in the Cuban government the grandpas in charge will continue to use Granma to communicate to their people, and they will also work together to maintain Castro's Cuba. With Castro's wish for a transition of the communist party into the hands of a younger generation, his brother, 76-year-old Raul Castro, has been elected as the country's new president. (0) comments
As I sit here in a comfortable study going through my daily routine of life - writing, and with the freedom to do more or less as I please - my mind wanders toward those who are protecting this great country.
I think of those brave military men and women who are willing to fight in the armed forces, and look up at them in a humble adulation and hope that their gallantry is unfettered. Although I highly respect and admire our military, it hurts me to say that not all is well in the company of "Uncle Sam's" best and brightest.

Torn shirts stained by sweat and dirt is picked up from machines while harvesting the soil. My father, a farm worker, has irrigated hundreds of acres of land and performs the same back-breaking labor, just like the fathers of the College Assistant Migrant Program students. (0) comments
