Sacramento State second baseman Taylor Watanabe and catcher Brett Tanigawa were both born and raised in what most refer to as paradise - the Hawaiian Islands - and more exactly, Oahu island.
Coach John Smith said that Watanabe and Tanigawa, both fifth-year seniors who red-shirted their first seasons in 2004, have shown vast improvement since crossing the Pacific Ocean to come to Sacramento.

Katz recruits another to his new team
New men's basketball coach Brian Katz's second player signed to the Hornets is Antonio Flaggs, a 6-foot-3-inch, 130 pound swingman from Diablo Valley College.
Flaggs was the second leading scorer on a team that won the Big 8 Conference. He also co-captained the team that went 26-8 overall.

Matt McDougall has been kicking around a ball since 1997 and has no intention of stopping anytime soon. In addition to being the Sacramento State men's soccer goalkeeper coach, he also coaches for the San Juan Soccer club and the San Juan Thunders, while also playing professionally with the Major Indoor Soccer League as the goalkeeper for the California Cougars. New basketball coach Brian Katz was ready for the job before the job was ready for him. Without a set of office keys, a desk or even a OneCard, Katz dove into his first day of work on April 10 to take command of and turn around a team that finished its last season with a 4-24 record.
"If you can meet a coach and he's ready right then and there, he's a good coach," point guard Vinnie McGhee Jr. said.

The Hornets were 8-0 against Big Sky competition, giving them 50 consecutive wins in their conference dating back to 2002.

A big reason for the team's success is that distance runners have stepped up and emerged as conference leaders. The athletes do not receive the glory that sprinters receive, but they still go the extra mile - literally.

Then again, I have borne witness to some of these sessions ending up in fisticuffs, but I digress.
