Opinion

Hugo Chavez is a nuisance. However, Chavez cannot be underestimated. Recently, he welcomed some Tu-160's to his country, antiquated fighter jets from Russia, in a half-assed attempt to flex geopolitical muscle while elevating tensions between two old Cold War rivals. What Chavez doesn't understand is that the only worthwhile Russian inventions are AK-47s, Tetris and Siberian Huskies. (1) comment

Hugo Chavez's mission to create a Venezuela free from capitalist views continues to be a threat to the United States. (5) comments

Music of pretty much all genres has seemed to exponentially decrease in quality over the past few years. Once upon a time, you could turn on the radio and hear a good song. Once upon a time, you could turn on the radio and hear originality. Once upon a time, you could turn on the radio and hear a song that means something. (1) comment

When Howard Stern wants nothing to do with you, you know you have gone too far. Natalie Dylan, who is using a fake name for security purposes, is the latest Sacramento State alumnae to publicly humiliate this university. (7) comments

Words are powerful. Believe me, I get it. I am a journalism major with a capital 'J.' However, to think that in any way, shape or form I could actually literally mean harm upon Sarah Palin is ridiculous. Were you joking with all of these comments and letters? You had to be. No one could really think I would mean that, right? Apparently not. Apparently I need to clarify what I meant. (21) comments

Fixing the budget requires fixing Sacramento

The current dilemma with the California state budget demonstrates how broken Sacramento has become. (1) comment

Letter to the editor

Palin hardly represents women

To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to share my concern about the article titled "Palin hardly represents women," which was published in the Sep. 10 edition of the State Hornet. The State Hornet author, Ms. Monasky, wrote, "I hope her dad rapes her and she has to carry that child to term. I bet you she wouldn't. I bet she'd grab a coat hanger herself and take care of it" in regards to Gov. Palin's views on abortion. I believe that Ms. Monasky is trying to assert that if Gov. Palin were in a similar situation, that she might change her beliefs on abortion. I would respect Ms. Monasky more if she were to simply state it, as above, instead of wishing an act of violence upon Gov. Palin. (0) comments

Letter to the editor

Palin hardly represents women

Dear State Hornet: As a faculty member and, moreover, as a human being, it was with great sadness that I read Hillary Geiger and Briana Monasky's attacks on Sarah Palin. (4) comments

As a former opinion writer for The Hornet, I fully and faithfully support Briana Monasky's article, not just because I cannot stand Palin and McCain, but because I value the opportunity to voice one's opinion. I believe censorship undercuts democracy more than any other violation because once people cannot speak their mind without fear of censorship, then what is next? What do I mean by "next"? I do not know, that is what scares me (6) comments

Welcome to the fall 2008 semester. These are challenging and exciting times on campus, in the nation and throughout the world. We are all confronting the economic realities in our everyday lives. We drive by gas stations and are happy when we see gas at $4 a gallon. The once green lawns of our foreclosed neighbors are brown and dying as the sub-prime housing crisis hits home. (0) comments

Crack in a portable container can best define the hundreds of energy drink labels out in the market today. After gulping down the different flavors of Rockstar, Redbull, Monster and many more, the excited result is the same: a caffeine rush that lasts for hours and cannot be obtained by a simple cup of coffee. The opening ceremony for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games from Beijing, China set the tone for what was one of the most memorable Games ever. These Olympics had plenty of storylines and despite the controversy, the entertainment did not disappoint. (2) comments

Historically, women have been classified as inferior to men in society. But, which is truly the inferior sex? Women have fought for their civil rights throughout the American generations. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was signed into law granting women the right to vote. This right was the primary goal of the National Woman Suffrage Association, founded by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1869. (2) comments

For many, the circus is fun, safe entertainment families and children can enjoy. For all of us who have been educated on the mistreatment of their performing animals, we would say that the circus is far from being the greatest show on earth. (1) comment

The Beijing Olympics 2008: Something that we can all relate to. We, as Americans, are taking part in the worldwide games in one way or another. Whether you are an athlete competing, family or friends of a competing athlete, or just an observer, the games have had an effect on us. (0) comments

Horoscopes

We know the future - sucks to be you

If today is your birthday: You are probably the only one who cares. Get over yourself. View news articles from previous years to see what other atrocities were inflicted upon the planet on this day besides your birth. (2) comments

We are not mad enough about not having a state budget for it to make a difference. We may fuss a little bit or shake our head and sigh, but what does that do? Actually take the time to call your local lawmakers and let them know just how pitiful they are. (1) comment

Ladies and gentlemen, I just returned from a business, week-long sojourn in the desert, and let me tell you, dear readers, I have witnessed the American dream in all its splendid multiplicity! (0) comments

There are more than twice as many publicized candidates for the next Jelly Belly flavor than there are for the next president of the United States. Two may be the best number when it comes to an intimate relationship or type of pencil, but two simply is not sufficient when concerning the potential leadership of the strongest nation in the world. The current bicameral system leaves America, a dynamic nation of individuals and free-thinkers, voting based on static and predetermined stances. (2) comments

Palin hardly represents women

The 2008 presidential campaign has been a major interest and concern for me, as it should be for any college student with the ability to exercise their right to vote their conscience. (27) comments

Ladies, do you ever worry about your man cheating on you? Well consider this. (7) comments

Barack Obama might be popular now but he wasn't always the center of attention. He only became senator of Illinois out of default after the Republican nominee Jack Ryan withdrew due to a sex scandal. His speeches may be moving to some but when questioned on his standings he avoids the question and moves on, seeming annoyed. (7) comments

There's a reason things feel unusual at Sacramento State this semester, things are changing for the better. (2) comments
