Review: Mellow Me Out

Midterms are in full effect, your current job is switching your hours from part time to full time and when was the last time you sat down to have a meal?

The semester is stressful to say the least and sometimes you just want to blow off class, go home and take a nap. Before you do that, be sure to check out Mellow Me Out Day Spa located on the first floor of the University Union. (0) comments

Soulja Boy has more growing up to do

CD Review: Soulja Boy Tell 'Em

If you can get past the crunktastical beats and repetition, Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, isn't a bad album. That's not to say that it's a great one either, but it is a solid effort.

I'm not sure why I expected more out of this album. I suppose because there was a lot of good buzz around it. He produced over half of the 14 tracks on his CD. With that said, young Soulja may have to go back to the drawing board. Just because you produce most of your album does not give you a pass to be mediocre. (1) comment

Revenge of the nerds

"Nerds will rule the world," Kevin Kinsella said with a smile. "That's the point of Pointdexter...nerds will rule." For lead singer of rock group Pointdexter, being "nerdy" must mean balancing practice, a part-time job, and a full-time school load. Every member of Pointdexter is a student and has another job besides the band, yet the band has finished it's first album and will host its release party on Oct. 20 at Marilyn's in downtown Sacramento. Snowing goggles, snowboards, skis

Free lift tickets and giveaways will make the 42nd Annual Ski Swap appealing to many. The event will be hosted by the Sacramento State Ski and Snowboard Club from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 in the University Union Ballroom.

The event, put on by one of the oldest clubs on campus, has helped local shops sell their old gear and allowed the community to buy good conditioned name-brand equipment for a discount price. (1) comment

The "Darjeeling Limited" is the latest movie from the creative mind of Wes Anderson, the director of such movies as "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums". "Darjeeling Limited" is in the fashion of his previous movies and Anderson yet again uses his own unique humor to tell a good story.

The film is about three brothers who go on a spiritual journey to mend an estranged relationship between the three of them. Along the way, the brothers are forced to face the problems they have in their own lives, the problems they have with each other and the problems they have with a traumatic event that happened within the family. On Tuesday Paramount released its biggest movie of the year, "Transformers," on DVD in both a single and two-disc special edition set. Since the single disc doesn't have much of anything in extras, we bought a two-disc edition and shoved into the old DVD player to see what's there and if it's worth spending any money on it. The movie itself warrants shelling out $20 or $30 as it is for lack of a better set of words, freaking awesome. (0) comments

'30 days of Night' has little bite

Film Review: '30 days of Night'

If you're looking for a scary, yet predictable horror film, then "30 Days of Night" might be exactly what you're aiming for. The story is set in a small town in Alaska called "Borough," in which every year, for one month the sun never shines. This sounds like a nightmare already. Josh Hartnett plays as the town Sheriff "Eben," who is the cute boy next door who eventually turns into a vampire-slaying bad ass. His estranged wife "Stella," played by Melissa George, who is also the fire chief tries desperately to get out of Alaska for the month of darkness but was unsuccessful. Who in their right mind wouldn't try to get out? (0) comments

When it comes to musicians, everyone seems to love the lead singer; but there's more to a band than the guy who gets to strut around in the spotlight. Apparently, "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller feels the same way. With the help of the Fox network, Fuller unveiled his newest reality show Friday night: "The Next Great American Band." Jimmy Eat World chases the top of the charts

Album Review: Jimmy Eat World

In an era where the most popular musical genre is emo, it is rather refreshing when artists release an upbeat and optimistic record. Ironically, a band that is considered by many to have been one of the pioneers of the emo scene has created such an album.

"Chase This Light" is the new release by Jimmy Eat World. Uncharacteristically positive and bright, this album could very well be in regular rotation on your local pop radio station. But have no fear, you need not be a fan of pop or emo to enjoy Jimmy Eat World's latest effort, you simply must be a fan of good music. (0) comments

Bringing some 'culture' to Sac

Some Sacramento State students appreciate "real" underground hip-hop. But what does that sound like?

The Cap City Culture Concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the University Union is supposed to be just that. The free show will feature some of the best masters of ceremonies, disc jockeys and breakdancers that Cap City, or the Capital City, has to offer. Sponsored by KSSU 1580 AM, PVS Radio and UNIQUE, the concert will feature performances by local hip-hop groups including Addict Merchants, Live Manikins and Neighborhood Watch. (0) comments

Crowned student is master of two worlds

Sacramento State student and reigning Miss Deaf California, wants to bridge the gap between the hearing world and the deaf community.

Crowned student is master of two worlds

Amanda Folendorf said she lives in two worlds. In one world, she speaks to communicate with others. In the other world, she uses American Sign Language to communicate. Spend just a few moments with Folendorf, a junior Sacramento State government major, and you might find that she exemplifies both worlds simultaneously. This is part of what recently earned Folendorf the title of Miss Deaf California 2007 to 2009.

"I need things in the hearing world and the deaf world," she said. "I'll never fully be deaf or hearing. I can go back and forward." (1) comment

Making strides toward a cure

Imagine your doctor saying four simple words: "You have breast cancer." With more than 40,000 women who lose their fight against the disease each year, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Despite the dark side of the disease there is a story of courage and hope. (0) comments

Children's Center selling kid's crafts

When a child creates a work of art, parents and teachers celebrate it. But the Associated Students Inc. Children's Center directors believe everyone should be able to celebrate, and decided to do something about it.

The center is participating in the Worldwise Education's Artwork for Education Fundraiser, a program that converts children's artwork into greeting cards in hopes of raising money for the center's programs. (0) comments

Going the extra 'Miles'

'Fast your soul'

Students participated in fasting from sunrise to sunset for a month, during Ramadan.

'Fast your soul'

Becky Sawyer, a junior government major, said she recently had a life-changing experience after visiting a local Muslim center. Sawyer and her high school friend are finally talking again, after a two-year period of no contact because of a feud.

Sawyer said it was her visit to the center during the Islamic month of Ramadan that helped her reflect on what needed to be changed in her life. (0) comments

Dessert Diner has all your sweet tooth can handle

Bryan Adams once sang,

"I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more... Ya know it's true Everything I do - I do it for you."

When most people hear that song, they either think about how good of a love song it is, or how cheesy it is. What most people do not realize is that Adams is really singing about sex here. (2) comments
